Jr. Agronomist

A permanent, full-time position on a PEI potato farm, working alongside our Senior Agronomist across the field, the storages, the packing facility and the office.

Summary

We are looking for a motivated and hands-on Jr. Agronomist to work closely with our Senior Agronomist and support our potato production, storage, and packing operations.

The position includes field scouting, crop trials, storage monitoring, quality assessments, data collection, and record-keeping. The successful candidate will work alongside the Agronomist across the field, potato storage facilities, packing facility, and office.

The role reports to the Senior Agronomist, sits in the Farm department, and the start date is as soon as we find the right person.

Who we are

G. Visser & Sons is a potato farm and packing operation located in Orwell Cove on beautiful Prince Edward Island. For over 40 years, we have been growing potatoes of all colors, shapes, and sizes in rich red PEI soil.

We have built a solid reputation of consistently growing quality potatoes, or spuds as we often call them, for both the fresh table market and for seed. Our packing operation washes, grades, and packs potatoes to be enjoyed throughout Canada, the United States, and Puerto Rico.

On our farm, sustainability and stewardship are not just buzzwords but are values that shape our operation and culture. In addition to potatoes, we grow a wide variety of rotation crops including corn, grain, and soil builders.

We are still family owned and family run. Gerrit Visser came over from Holland and settled on Prince Edward Island in 1954, and passed his love of growing along to the generations that followed. We care for our people, our community and the land we farm, and we bring PEI spuds to dinner plates across the country.

Major tasks

Crop production and agronomy

Assist with potato variety and growing trials.
Monitor crop development throughout the growing season.
Conduct field scouting and crop assessments.
Assist with soil, tissue, and crop sampling.
Record crop performance and field activities.

Storage monitoring

Inspect potato storages regularly.
Monitor temperature, humidity, ventilation, and crop condition.
Identify and report quality, disease, breakdown, or storage concerns.
Maintain storage records and reports.

Harvest and crop assessment

Inspect and sample incoming potatoes during harvest.
Assess quality, defects, size, and overall condition.
Collect and record harvest and quality data.

Quality assurance

Assess packed potatoes to ensure customer and market specifications are met.
Monitor size, appearance, defects, and pack quality.
Maintain quality and traceability records.
Report quality concerns and assist with improvements.

Data and record keeping

Enter and maintain field, harvest, storage, and quality data.
Maintain spreadsheets, reports, and farm records.
Assist with data analysis and management reports.
Ensure records are accurate and completed on time.

Education and qualifications

Preferred:

Diploma or degree in Agriculture, Agronomy, Plant Science, Crop Technology, Biology, or a related field.
Experience in potato production, crop scouting, quality assurance, storage management, or agricultural research is an asset.

What we offer

Competitive compensation, based on experience and qualifications

Permanent and full time, Monday to Friday, averaging 45 hours a week with two days off. Overtime is paid at 1.5 times the regular hourly wage when required, and may be needed during busy peak seasons. Health and dental benefits included. We are happy to talk about the rate directly, so please ask.

The work environment, plainly

You will be in the field, in storages and in the packing facility as well as at a desk, so expect noise, dust, cool and damp conditions, and various farm equipment. Applicants must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs, walk fields and uneven terrain for extended periods, work outdoors in different weather, climb stairs and ladders as required, and work extended hours when needed during planting and harvest.
